Mothers Group: June 21st 2011

We had a wonderful meeting this evening with our guest speaker 'Casey Miller', a nutritionist. Firstly we welcomed Angie's gorgeous little girl Sasha who was born last week. Angie and Sasha are doing really well. Then everybody had a chance to speak about where they were at with there pregnancy or how they were going with there little one.

Casey spoke about several area's of nutrition particularly for your baby. Here were some points that Casey  covered. Casey really enjoyed coming and speaking to our mom's and said will join us for future meetings just to see how everyone is progressing and for questions about nutrition.

Food and your baby:

It is advised to not start having solids until 5- 6 months.  It is common to begin at 4months however, it is safer to start from 5-6months if possible

-Begin with vegetables like carrots, pumpkin, peas and squash. Then introduce fruit like pear, apple, peach and apricot. It is often best to start with vegetables, because its hard to get them on vegetables once having eaten fruit, due to the sweetness of the fruit. From here you can go to Rice/Oats ( sometimes mixed with breast milk)

-At 7-9 months it is good to introduce meats/legumes. It is at this point that the baby has an increasing need for iron.

Food to avoid before 1 year of age: These are avoided due to allergy
Chocolate, honey, pork, no whole milk, shellfish, strawberries, nuts and eggs. The white of the egg is usually ok.

Cooking homemade baby food:
Recommended to begin with one vegetable at a time, then fruit.
A great way to store your homemade baby food is to use ice trays. These are also a great serving size, and you can have one of each ice cube for a meal, defrost on counter and serve. Also great for travelling or going out to places.

Casey had a demonstration of how easy it easy to make your own baby food-
We used avocado, pumpkin ( Organic pumpkin in a can, due to pumpkin being out of season here) and peach. We used half and avocado, 1/2 can of organic pumpkin no additives and a whole peach peeled. We then blended until soft.
It was a great combination, because the peach gave it a hint of sweetness that was not overpowering, and then the baby would be having delicious pumpkin and the good fats from avocado.

Thanks so much Casey, see you next month Nola Mothers group. I will keep you updated about our next group meeting.
