Breastfeeding: Tips from our Lactation Consultant Michele

Our last mothers group we were lucky to have Michele Granito a lactation consultant from New Orleans come and speak and answer many questions. Michele emailed me a follow up of the meeting -

Ladies,
It was a pleasure being a part of your Mommy Group last night.  I hope I answered some of your questions and gave you food for thought (or milk for thought)!  Speaking of which…. Here is the link to the website I told you about:    www.milkforthought.com
For the mommies-to-be, remember these important tips:
TIP#1  Skin to Skin Contact as close to delivery as possible immediately following a vaginal delivery and within a couple of hours after a c-section. This gives the infant a chance to breastfeed if he is awake and alert to do so.  If he doesn’t after about an hour of skin to skin, then try again.  If possible, leave an infant skin to skin as long as possible until he breastfeeds.
TIP#2   Attempt to breastfeed 8-12 times in 24 hours.
TIP#3  Do not use supplements/bottles/pacifiers unless directed by a physician.  Colostrum/breastmilk is all an infant requires the first 6 months of life.
TIP#4  Room-In at the hospital.  This means keep the infant in the room with you as much as possible.  The infant can and should sleep in the same room with you.  Unless you are ill or the doctor/nurse requests the infant in the nursery, it is best for mom and baby that the infant stay in the room.
TIP#5  Don’t be afraid to ask for help.  The hospital Lactation Consultant is for the purpose of helping new moms get off to a great start with breastfeeding.
